WASHINGTON, DC: On July 25, the House Appropriations Committee passed the FY19 Homeland Security Appropriations bill, its final bill for this year. This bill includes $17.8 billion in discretionary funds for Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and $7.4 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Included in CBP's funding is $5 billion for border security assets and infrastructure. This funding will be used to construct more than 200 miles of new physical barrier construction along the southern border and to invest in new border security technology. WASHINGTON, DC: Today, the House Committee on Appropriations is considering the FY19 Homeland Security Appropriations bill. Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) authored, and the committee approved, an amendment to permanently fix the H-2B visa program. The seafood processing industry and other employers on Maryland's Eastern Shore depend on this program to hire temporary workers when they cannot find Americans interested in their job openings. WASHINGTON, DC: On July 24, the U.S. Department of Labor announced it will issue a $2 million grant for the implementation of job training programs in substance abuse rehabilitation facilities in Maryland. This grant is part of a broader $22 million effort to provide reemployment services for individuals affected by substance abuse disorder. Included in this legislation is an amendment to authorize the planting of genetically-modified (GMO) seed on National Wildlife Refuge land. WASHINGTON, DC: On July 9, Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) made the following statement regarding President Trump's nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court:

"Judge Kavanaugh is a fine choice to fill Justice Kennedy's seat on the Supreme Court. Judge Kavanaugh is a brilliant legal mind, and is well suited to follow in the footsteps of Justice Kennedy, for whom he previously clerked. As Judge Kavanaugh was previously confirmed by a bipartisan Senate vote, I hope the Senate will again confirm him without delay."

WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) is pleased to announce that the U.S. Military Service Academies nomination application is now available for students wishing to join the class of 2023. Congressman Harris will nominate some of the finest students from Maryland's First Congressional District for appointments to the U.S. Military, Naval, Air Force, and Merchant Marine Academies. The Coast Guard Academy does not require a Congressional nomination, though Congressman Harris will recommend interested applicants on a case-by-case basis.
