Reality of Higher Costs Under Obamacare Puts 13,000 Marylanders at Risk

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. released the following statement regarding news that Aetna will not be providing health insurance in Maryland’s exchange. The reality of higher costs under Obamacare is putting 13,000 Marylanders with Aetna insurance at risk. Despite higher premiums announced last week by the Maryland Insurance Administration, Aetna would still have operated at a loss if they participated in Maryland’s exchange.

Today’s Report Shows that Marylanders Will Still Pay More for Insurance

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. voted to cut the State Department foreign aid budget by $8 billion, a decrease of 19% from current levels, bringing the expenditures down to 2008 levels before President Obama was elected. The savings would be achieved through legislation that funds the State Department and was considered today by the Committee on Appropriations. As a member of the Committee, Congressman Harris voted in favor of the bill and the proposed reduction in foreign aid.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tonight, Congressman Andy Harris, MD voted for two bills that would give both individuals and businesses a one year delay from The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). The first bill H.R. 2667 “The Authority for Mandate Delay Act” would delay for one year the requirement that employers who have more than 50 full time employees provide health insurance for their employees. It would also delay the reporting requirements associated with the mandate. The second bill H.R.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week marked the 50th Annual National Small Business week – a time to celebrate the contributions of small business to the American economy. To recognize the efforts of small businesses in Maryland’s First Congressional District, Congressman Harris is creating an “Entrepreneur Certificate” that will be presented to businesses that are making positive contributions to their community. Throughout the week, Congressman Harris asked people in the first district to share with him businesses that they believe deserve recognition.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, the House Appropriations Committee passed the appropriations bill to fund the Department of Defense. Congressman Andy Harris, M.D., the only physician who serves on the committee, successfully advocated for 15 million dollars in funding for reconstructive transplant research. This is the same amount as the program received last year; however during this time when extra scrutiny is being applied to the budget, the threat of a cut to, or elimination of this program existed.
