WASHINGTON, DC: On April 12, the U.S. House of Representatives rejected H.J.Res. 2, the Balanced Budget Amendment. The amendment would have amended the U.S. Constitution to require that Congress not spend more than it receives in revenue, unless Congress authorizes the excess by a three-fifths majority in each chamber. SMITH ISLAND, Md - Prayers are being answered on Smith Island.

Last year, state officials allocated $6.88 million dollars for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to restore proper access for watermen.

Now, Maryland's first district congressman and other officials are checking in to see the progress that has been made.

"We're gonna visit the work that's both getting working boats in and out as well as making sure that the main channel to the island is dredged," says Congressman Andy Harris.

HOOPER'SISLAND, Md.- With wooden pole in hand, waterman Tommy Palley shows a deep-rooted problem in the waterways surrounding Hooper's Island.

"At the most, this probably isn't even a foot and a half," Palley said holding the pole in the water.

Underneath the blue-green waters of Tar Bay, shoaled land has been slowly taking over for more than ten years, damaging boats and leaving watermen wondering if the channel in and around Fishing Creek will ever be dredged.

GRASONVILLE — Boy Scout Troop 765 hosted an Eagle Court of Honor for Jacob McLaughlin, 17, of Queenstown on Saturday afternoon, March 31, at the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center. The troop is sponsored by Safe Harbor Presbytarian Church in Stevensville.

Longtime troop Scoutmaster Jim Williams called the court of honor together shortly after 2 p.m., with presentation of colors by scouts of the troop. Williams called upon U.S. Army Colonel (Retired) John Taylor, Jacob's grandfather, to serve as Master of Ceremonies.

WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01), alongside Congressmen Jack Bergman (MI-01), Steve Chabot (OH-01), and William Keating (MA-09), led a bipartisan letter, signed by 89 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, supporting the release of additional H-2B visas in order to meet the needs of small seasonal businesses in Maryland's First Congressional District and across the country. The Fiscal Year 2018 cap of 66,000 H-2B visas was filled on January 1, 2018, leaving many businesses unable to obtain the temporary seasonal labor they need.

WASHINGTON DC: On Saturday, April 7, Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) will visit two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects underway around Smith Island. The projects entail the construction of two jetties to improve navigation at Rhodes Point and dredging the Big Thorofare and Twitch Cove federal channels. Members of the media are welcome to attend these visits with Congressman Harris and his staff. Transportation to Smith Island will be provided. The boat will depart from Somers Cove Marina promptly at 10:30 AM.

CHESTERTOWN — Dixon Valve and Coupling Co. has announced that it is giving employees $1,000 bonuses thanks to the federal tax reform, an act highlighted March 28 in a news release by House Speaker Paul Ryan.

While promoting the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act at Dixon in Chestertown, last year, Ryan, R-Wisc., spoke to employees about all the potential benefits tax reform could bring.

"It all leads to the same end, which is help people become more prosperous," he told the people at Dixon that day.
