Two Year Anniversary of Failed Stimulus Package

February 18, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC – Today marks the second anniversary of the failed Stimulus package being signed into law. With a final price tag of over $1 trillion, the Stimulus bill did nothing but add to our out-of-control national debt, which now stands at over $14 trillion. Despite promises after passage of keeping the unemployment rate under 8 percent and creating or saving 3.5 million jobs, the unemployment rate has been over 9 percent for a record 21 straight months and 2.5 million jobs have been lost since being implemented.

“The failed Stimulus package was a government plan that crowded out private industry and added to our national debt,” said Rep. Andy Harris. “It is a sad reminder that we cannot borrow and spend our way to prosperity. To build an environment for positive growth and job creation, we must stop spending money we don’t have.”

Key Stimulus Facts

  • There are 6.8 million fewer jobs than the Administration predicted.
  • 47 out of 50 States have lost jobs.
  • A 70 percent rise in debt and unemployment has created an enormous “Obama Misery Index”

“I believe that before anything else, government must first do no harm, especially to the economy. And while it is necessary for a free society, government should be a partner, not a bully – a helping hand, not a hindrance. Most of all, America must remain a beacon of freedom to all those who think, like me, that our best days are still to come.” - Andy Harris, Thoughtful Conservatism
