Rep Harris Criticizes “Gold” Health Care Benefit for Members of Congress

October 3, 2013

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Harris released the following statement on President Obama's plan to give Members of Congress the "Gold" health care benefit:

“Under Obamacare, Members of Congress and staff will receive special treatment unavailable to the American public. Members of Congress will receive subsidized health insurance coverage on the exchanges established by Obamacare, even though employer subsidies are specifically banned for everyone else.

In addition, under a notification issued this week, Members of Congress can only select among “Gold” tier health insurance, rather than lower-level “Bronze” or “Silver” plans. Taxpayer subsidies will be provided to Congress only for this “Gold” level health care.

This is another reason why some in Congress are so desperate to pass what they call a “clean” funding bill: because they want to protect their subsidized “Golden” health care benefit. This special treatment, as well as all special treatment under Obamacare, must stop."

Congress makes the law and Congress can change the law – including ending the taxpayer subsidy of their “Golden” health care benefit.”
