Harris Writes Letter to PSC Urging Them to Use Budget Surplus Before Approving Rate Hikes
WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01), Acting Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee wrote a letter to the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) regarding Delmarva Power & Light’s (DP&L) recently announced and proposed increases to their utility rates. DP&L serves approximately 208,000 residents in Maryland's First Congressional District and these proposed increases would cost constituents hundreds of dollars each year. As the letter notes, in the last two years, Maryland has received billions of dollars in emergency federal assistance and is slated to receive billions more, including nearly $8 billion for infrastructure. Through the receipt of these funds and through increased tax returns, the State of Maryland has also run a nearly $2 billion surplus.
Congressman Harris issued the following the statement:
"As people are struggling with the burden of runaway inflation and a plummeting stock market, it would be incredibly unfortunate to pass along these expenses to hard-working consumers when there is a common-sense, alternative solution. Combating residents’ increasing costs begins by spending wisely, and so, in no uncertain terms, I urge the Commission to first utilize any unspent federal or budget surplus dollars before approving any rate hikes.”
