Harris Statement on Fiscally Irresponsible Bill Offering Temporary Protected Status to Venezuelan Immigrants

July 24, 2019

WASHINGTON -- Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01) made the following statement on a fiscally irresponsibe bill that offers Temporary Protected Status to Venezuelan Immigrants:

"We should consider giving Temporary Protected Status to immigrants from Venezuela who are oppressed by Mr. Maduro, who I believe is illegally occupying the Venezuelan Presidency. However, I voted against the legislation as currently drafted because the House once again suspended its paygo rule that requires we offset the half billion dollar cost of this legislation by decreasing spending on another program with a lower priority - instead of just adding the cost of this bill to our debt and deficit. It is wrong to disregard our House rules and pass fiscally irresponsible bills that put the debt and deficit burden on our children and grandchildren."
