Harris Highlights Flaws in Paris Agreement

January 22, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. co-sponsored a House Resolution urging President Biden to submit the Paris Agreement on carbon emissions reduction to the Senate for treaty ratification. A simple agreement by the sitting executive would mean the agreement could not carry the force of law and cannot be used as a legal basis for new regulation or binding actions. Studies indicate that the enactment of the Paris Agreement could result in:

  • A total income loss of over $20,000 for a family of four
  • An average manufacturing shortfall of over 200,000 jobs
  • Increases between 13-20% in household electricity costs

Congressman Harris issued the following statement:

"While reports may conflict on whether President Biden campaigned on ending fossil fuels, I know I held concerns, and rejoining this agreement that rewards polluters like China and India is disappointing but not surprising. The President said he will work with both sides and hear people out, but this action on day one of the Biden Administration goes against that promise. This agreement will carry no force of law and cannot be used as a means to regulate energy output. If the President is serious about reducing carbon emissions he should submit this agreement to the Senate for ratification."
