Harris Announces Two Sizable HHS Grants to Mid-Shore Organizations

December 1, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC: Rep. Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) today announced the award of a combined $5,845,216 in federal grants to two different organizations located in Caroline County – Choptank Community Health System in Denton ($3,345,874) and the Maryland Rural Development Corporation in Greensboro ($2,499,342). Funds originated from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Choptank Community Health will use the funds for their work in providing comprehensive primary care to low income patients on the Mid-Shore. Maryland Rural Development will use the funds for their Head Start Programs across Maryland, including in the First Congressional District. According to HHS, Head Start "promotes the school readiness of infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children from low-income families. Services are provided in a variety of settings including centers, family child care, and children's own home."

Congressman Harris issued the following statement:

"This is great news for these two organizations that provide important services for those in need on the Eastern Shore. My office is always happy to assist in applying for these grants, and I remain committed to ensuring that our rural communities have equal access to the services they need to grow and thrive."
