Harris Announces Initial Funding for Slaughter Creek Dredging Project

January 19, 2022

WASHINGTON, DC: Rep. Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) today announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has awarded $50,000 in federal funds for the initial engineering and design for dredging of Slaughter Creek in Dorchester County. In October 2021, Congressman Harris took a delegation of officials from USACE and the Maryland Port Authority to Slaughter Creek to hear from local business owners with concerns, and to discuss the cost savings opportunity of using this location as a base of operations for future USACE island replenishment projects, like James Island.

Congressman Harris issued the following statement:

"I have heard for years the concerns from local citizens and local government officials about the need to dredge Slaughter Creek. Thankfully, with this round of funding, we will begin this long overdue process, and additionally it will allow us to continue the important work of island restoration along the Mid-Shore. This is a win-win for all parties involved, and I remain committed to ensuring that issues like this receive the proper attention they deserve from the federal agencies responsible."

Additionally, in July 2021, Congressman Harris took an official delegation of House Appropriations Members to Dorchester County to learn about the invasive northern snakehead and again discuss the need for dredging along Slaughter Creek.
