Harris Announces Grant for Low Income Housing in Kent County

November 13, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC: Rep. Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) announced the award of a $39,784 federal grant to Rebuilding Together, located in Chestertown. The grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of Rural Development.

Rebuilding Together Kent County is a local affiliate of Rebuilding Together, the nation's largest volunteer home repair and rehabilitation organization. The program utilizes donated building materials and volunteer time to repair and rehabilitate the houses of low-income homeowners who are elderly, disabled and/or families with children.

The funds will be administered through the Housing Preservation Grants program. According to USDA, the grant will specifically be used "to repair and rehabilitate the homes of low and very-low income residents in Kent County, Maryland. These funds will enable Rebuilding Together Kent County MD, Inc. to offer low income homeowners grants and/or low interest loans for critical home repair projects designed to improve their living conditions. Because of this investment, homes repaired will be able to meet current property and safety standards."

Rep. Andy Harris made the following statement:

"As a member of the Agriculture Subcommittee of the Committee on Appropriations, I applaud the award of this federal grant to a rural affiliate of Rebuilding Together here in the First District. I appreciate their efforts to improve living conditions for the elderly, the disabled and low-income families, and this federal investment will help our local communities on the Eastern Shore. I understand rural America needs these investments to better care for families in need of assistance, and I am committed to supporting our local rural communities."
