Harris Announces Federal Assistance Awarded in Dorchester County
WASHINGTON, DC: Rep. Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) announced the award of a $5,831,000 federal grant for the Twin Cities wastewater treatment plant, shared by the towns of Secretary and East New Market located in Dorchester County. The funds were awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of Rural Development. The grant will be accompanied by a loan of $1,149,000.
The award will be used to upgrade the wastewater treatment plant for enhanced nutrient removal. According to USDA, it will "correct a health and sanitary problem at the existing treatment plant due to its deteriorating condition and inability to meet upcoming permit effluent limitations."
Rep. Andy Harris made the following statement:
"As a member of the Agriculture Subcommittee of the Committee on Appropriations, I applaud the investment of these federal funds on the Eastern Shore. This grant will help protect the environment and the Chesapeake Bay and supplement limited local resources. I understand this type of investment is needed to sustain our rural communities."
