Harris Announces Award of Three Grants to Eastern Shore Fire Companies
WASHINGTON, DC: Rep. Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) announced the award of three Federal Emergency Management Agency grants to local volunteer fire companies on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The grants was awarded through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG), and totaled more than $46,000. According to FEMA, "the primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards." Specific grant allocations are below:
- Princess Anne Volunteer Fire Company: $9,239.61
- Denton Volunteer Fire Company: $34,857.14
- Hurlock Volunteer Fire Company: $2,701.81
Congressman Harris made the following statement:
"I am proud to support our first responders and the local communities they serve. Especially during the last year, the ability of local fire stations to raise desperately needed funds has been diminished, and dollars like these will go a long way in helping them stay afloat and ready to answer the call. These selfless volunteers save lives, and being a member of the Appropriations Committee, I fully support grants like these."
