Congressmen Andy Harris, M.D. and Glenn Ivey Release Joint Statement on Introduction of Frederick Douglass Congressional Gold Medal Act

February 24, 2024

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (R-MD-01) joined fellow Maryland Congressman Glenn Ivey (D-MD-04) in releasing a statement following their joint introduction of the Frederick Douglass Congressional Gold Medal Act.

Background On Legislation:

In connection with Black History Month, Congressmen Harris and Ivey introduced the Frederick Douglass Congressional Gold Medal Act which honors the great Frederick Douglass for his visionary and devoted leadership to the cause of freedom, as well as human rights, voting rights, and civil rights.

Born into slavery in 1818 on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Frederick Douglass was a true patriot who dedicated his life to the pursuit of freedom and the abolition of slavery. From his renowned lectures and publications, to advocating for the passage of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments, Frederick Douglass’ contributions to the American dream cannot be understated. Few Americans have shaped our nation so profoundly as his principles remain the bedrock on which we continue to build a more perfect union.

Fredrick Douglass was a true patriot who bequeathed to future generations a lasting legacy on civil rights that would serve as a blueprint and remain for future leaders to fulfill. Yet,  Fredrick Douglass has never received a proper, official commendation from his country.

The Frederick Douglass Congressional Gold Medal Act ensures that Frederick Douglass finally receives from Congress and the nation the accolades, appreciation, and honor that he so undeniably deserves. The medal would be displayed at the National Museum of African American History and Culture and could be displayed at other sites and events that would honor the great Frederick Douglass.

The Gold Medal Congressional Act can be read here.

Congressman Harris Statement:

“I am pleased to join Congressman Glenn Ivey in introducing the Frederick Douglass Congressional Gold Medal Act to honor Frederick Douglass’ incredible contribution to the pursuit of freedom. The legacy of Frederick Douglass remains a source of inspiration for countless First District residents, Marylanders, and Americans and it is time that we give him the official recognition he deserves.”

 Congressman Ivey Statement:

“Few Americans have had as much of an impact on the course of human events in the United States as Frederick Douglass. His truly meaningful contributions in uplifting our nation from the depths and depravity of slavery to the onward march towards self-determination and self-improvement have made his mark on our history. This bipartisan effort at recognizing a life well lived and a national treasure in the personification of freedom and self-reliance is long overdue.  I thank Congressman Harris and the other co-sponsors of this bill to award Frederick Douglass the Congressional Gold Medal,” said Congressman Glenn Ivey, (MD-04)
