Congressman Andy Harris Congratulates Science Fair Winners from Bel Air
WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) congratulated several students from Maryland’s First District on the national recognition of their science fair project on cochlear implants. A group of students from Harford Day School in Bel Air were selected as regional winners in the prestigious, highly-competitive competition, the 2015 Toshiba/National Science Teachers Association ExploraVision Awards. The students excelled in their idea for a better cochlear implant device.
“These students proved that they are wise far beyond their years. The creativity, innovation, and knowledge these four finalists demonstrated in their implant device shows the promise our future has in the hands of these kids. To create technologies that improve the lives of many is no easy feat, and these students excelled in the challenge.”
Aidan Brehm, Arran Goldman, Ian Goldman, and Riya Khosla designed a cochlear implant that uses nano-technology and graphene to improve the quality of sound for patients who suffer from severe hearing loss. They improved upon a limited design to aid the nearly half million people who depend on cochlear implants to communicate.
To congratulate the students for their hard work and subsequent winnings, the finalists were invited to visit the Capitol on Thursday, June 6th to meet with the Congressman, share their project, and receive a tour of the Capitol building.
